Music Review: ‘DEMI’

I’ve been a fan of Demi Lovato ever since June 20th, 2008. That day was when I watched Camp Rock for the very first time. That was the day I became a Lovatic (in other words, one of Demi’s biggest fans). In fact, I’m such a big fan of her that when I was shopping at Walmart, I found ‘Here We Go Again’ (her 2nd album) in the CD section, and was extremely tempted to buy it, just so I could have all 3 albums that were out at the moment (I currently have ‘Don’t Forget’ and ‘Unbroken’).

That was a few weeks ago.

Since then, a lot has happened. Demi has signed on to be a judge on ‘The X Factor US’ again, has released a new (or, I guess SOMEWHAT-new) single, ‘Heart Attack’. She also recently released her 4th album, self-titled, and it has received a lot of positive reviews. And now, I’m going to add one more positive review to that list πŸ™‚

On Monday, I was watching ‘The Voice’, and I saw a commercial for it. Let me tell you, I freaked out! I didn’t scream or anything, but I knew one thing: I was SO buying her album on iTunes! Fast forward to Tuesday morning. First thing before school, I downloaded several of the tracks (after hearing previews of each one online prior to its release). Here’s my opinion on each of the tracks πŸ™‚

Track 1: ‘Heart Attack’. Oh, my gosh. I LOVE this song SO MUCH! In fact, I put it on my iPod when it was first released back in late-February/early-March. It’s one of the few tracks I didn’t download, but that’s only because I already had the song.

Track 2: ‘Made In The U.S.A.’ I’m not sure why I didn’t like this one, but I guess it just didn’t appeal to me that much.

Track 3: ‘Without The Love’. Ok, this song is AWESOME!!! I love it… the beat, the lyrics, everything! It kinda reminds me of ’22’ by Taylor Swift (not the lyrics, but the beat/instrumental track).

Track 4: ‘Neon Lights’. Upon hearing this preview, I thought the song would be as awesome as Bridgit Mendler’s song, ‘City Lights’. However, I wasn’t a huge fan of the song. As a musician myself, I could hear a bit of auto-tune at the beginning (or maybe it was just my imagination. We all know that Demi hardly ever uses auto-tune in any of her songs…), and… let’s just say I didn’t really like this track all too much. Honestly, it sounds like something that would be played on Top 40 radio.

Track 5: ‘Two Pieces’. Two pieces of a broken heart. That’s a way for me to remember stuff I’ve learned in Math class πŸ™‚ I was listening to this song on repeat yesterday, so I had the song stuck in my head all day! Even while writing a Math exam. That’s how good this song is!

Track 6: ‘Nightingale’. 4 words: ‘Catching Fire’ Movie Soundtrack. Or any of the other Hunger Games movies. I could seriously see this song on the track list for ‘Catching Fire’, it’s that amazing!

Track 7: ‘In Case’. Another emotional ballad-type song about a breakup. In this song, Demi sings about breaking up with a guy, but keeping all the things he gave her “in case you don’t find what you’re looking for”. Accompanied by a piano, this song vaguely reminded me of the acoustic version of ‘This Is Me’.

Track 8: ‘Really Don’t Care’. Seriously, guys? You ‘really don’t care’ about this breakup, and whether the guy comes running back to you or not? Well, the only thing I care about is HOW TOTALLY AWESOME THIS SONG IS! πŸ˜€ Not kidding, I think it might be even better than ‘We Are Never Ever Getting Back Together’ AND ‘I Knew You Were Trouble’, COMBINED (and this is coming from a huge fan of Taylor Swift)! Also, I used to not like Cher Lloyd’s music (with the exception of a few songs), but her collab with Demi on this track totally made me become a fan!

Track 9: ‘Fire Starter’. (see ‘Track 2’)

Track 10: ‘Something That We’re Not’. OMG, this reminds me of ‘Don’t Forget’ (not the song, the album)! Seriously, she wrote a song called ‘The Middle’ (which was on ‘Don’t Forget’), and that reminds me of this song! Both of which I really like. A lot.

Track 11: ‘Never Been Hurt’. This is literally like ‘Unbroken 2.0’. I currently have the lyrics open on my computer, and I’m comparing them to that of the title track from Demi’s previous album. When she sings, “I will love you, like I’ve never been hurt. Never been hurt,” that just shows me how amazing her voice is (and, although she may use some auto-tune on a few songs, her voice is still AMAZING x 100!)

Track 12: ‘Shouldn’t Come Back’. Aww… this song is really sweet. It’s more acoustic-sounding than some of the other songs on this album, and I love it! If you listen to the song, you’ll know what I mean πŸ™‚

Track 13: ‘Warrior’. 4 words: Story. Of. My. Life. Not kidding, ‘Warrior’ is officially my story in song-form! Move over, ‘Who I Am’, I have a new song to describe my story! Although I stillΒ β™₯ Nick Jonas and ‘Who I Am’. I just feel that this song is more… personal. Plus, the piano in the song is AH-MAZING!!!!!! And Demi’s voice. OMG, she has such an AMAZING voice! A great way to end the album πŸ™‚

Apparently, there’s also a bonus track called ‘I Hate You, Don’t Leave Me’, that can be found on the Target edition of ‘DEMI’. However, I haven’t heard this song, so I can’t review it.

That funny moment when the only songs I have listened to are Made In The USA and Fire Starter…

LOL πŸ™‚ How ironic is it that those are the only songs you’ve listened to from ‘DEMI’, and they’re the 2 songs that are my least favourites! πŸ˜€
