love+war is fairly new to the indie music scene (I hadn’t heard of them until a few weeks ago), but their music is amazing! The Nashville-based duo (consisting of writer-producer team Coury Palermo & Ron Robinson) just released their latest concept album, Nine Lives— a 9-track album that consists of covers from the 70’s, 80’s, 90’s, and early 2000’s.
I must admit, the album as a whole didn’t really catch my attention– although there is one song that I absolutely love: their cover/medley of “At This Moment/If You Don’t Know Me by Now.” (which is possibly the longest song title in music history!)
The two songs (released in 1981 and 1989, respectively) have sort of become classics in pop music; the kind of thing that’s hard to replicate. But I strongly believe that this song is better than both of the originals! It’s evident that Palermo and Robinson put a lot of effort into making sure every detail was perfect– even enlisting the help of a former Christian music icon.
Rachael Lampa has been an influential artist in Christian music since 2000, when she released her debut album Live For You at the age of 15. Since then she’s released four full-length albums, two extended plays, and numerous promotional singles; and toured with countless artists including Boyz II Men, the Jonas Brothers, Jordin Sparks, and Hozier. Like many CCM listeners in the late 90’s-early 2000’s, I grew up listening to her music, so it was a nice surprise hearing her sing on this track. She has an amazing voice (reminiscent of Christina Aguilera), which complements Palermo’s voice really well.
Between the instrumentation (two electric guitars, which is very simple and reminds me of John Mayer’s music), the powerhouse vocals and harmonies from both Lampa and Palermo, and the production of the whole track, “At This Moment/If You Don’t Know Me by Now” is a song that I would highly recommend. Not just 5/5 stars… the song is so good that I would rate it 500/5 if I could!
