Well… almost 🙂 Now that it’s the middle of November, I’ve been listening to Christmas music and decorating my room for the holidays (as I do every year). I’m super excited because this year we have family coming for Christmas and New Year’s– which hasn’t happened in a long time. Also, just like last year, my parents and I are attending our local Christmas tradeshow… only this time around we’re doing it mostly for fun 🙂
Here are some pictures documenting my countdown to Christmas 2018!
(picture on left) My reaction when I first found out about the Christmas trade show? Grab my portable CD player, plug in some headphones, and listen to Hanson’s Snowed In album from 1997 AT FULL BLAST! (Yes I still listen to physical CDs, and my portable CD player still has amazing sound quality!) Honestly I’m sure a few people thought I was crazy when I bought this CD from the thrift store earlier in the year… but hey it’s sort of a retro thing, and I blog about retro stuff, so…
Also, I know this is sort of unrelated to the post, but have you heard Hanson’s NEW album String Theory? I ordered the CD off Amazon when it was released and just got it in the mail last week! I’ve only listened to a few of the songs (it’s a 2-CD album with about 22 or 23 songs altogether), but I AM LOVING IT! So far my favorite songs off the album are “Chasing Down My Dreams” and “No Rest For the Weary“… and, of course, the re-recorded version of their debut single “Mmmbop” 😉
(picture on right) Of course, I can’t decorate for Christmas without a mini Christmas tree! It looks a bit disheveled in the picture because my cat keeps jumping up onto the dresser and chewing certain parts of the tree… just a few days ago, in fact, she was gnawing at part of the red-and-gold garland, to the point where I just had to take it off the tree entirely (this was about a week after the picture was taken). (As much as I love Fluffy, she can be a little pain sometimes!)
(picture on left) Underneath the tree, I’ve also set up my childhood Precious Moments Nativity Set. I got it in about 2002 or 2003 (when I was about 4 years old), and some of the bits and pieces have been misplaced throughout the years. However I still set up what’s left of it as a reminder of what Christmas is really about.
(picture on right) As a graphic designer, I often have to think months ahead when it comes to designs. For example, we started designing Christmas things in August and are already looking at Valentine’s Day! However that doesn’t mean I can’t do some Christmas designs of my own! I recently upgraded my iPad and have been playing around with some of the cool apps on it, including (one that a lot of graphic designers use) Procreate. It’s so much fun, and I’ve been learning a lot of techniques for shading, highlights, etc…. techniques that will help my drawings come to life! This is a design I’ve been working on for the last few weeks; it might not be good enough for graphic design, but I’m pretty satisfied with the results 🙂
(picture on left) I LOVE MUSIC!!! And right now, the best motivating tool for me when I’m working is Christmas music in particular. (At the moment I’m rotating through my small but sentimental Christmas CD collection)… I’ll turn on my portable CD player or iTunes, plug my headphones in, and get to work 🙂
The CDs listed from top to bottom are: The Taylor Swift Holiday Collection; Merry Christmas by Mariah Carey; the aforementioned Snowed In by Hanson; Disney Channel Holiday (called Family Holiday here in Canada); Wrapped in Red by Kelly Clarkson; A Jann Arden Christmas; Glory in the Highest by Shane & Shane.
(picture on right) and finally, as Stevie Wonder said in his 1967 song What Christmas Means To Me… “Let’s deck the halls with holly, singing silent night. Trim the tree with angel hair and PRETTY PRETTY LIGHTS!”
Ok, let me explain. When I was unpacking my box of Christmas stuff from my closet, I came across this strand of multicolored LED Christmas lights. I plugged them in, and they all seemed to work, so I decided to do something with them. After debating what to do with the lights (because I wanted to put them up somewhere), I finally decided to string them along the top of my dresser, where my stereo and collection of Christmas CDs are. Does it look a little bit over the top? Maybe. But I like it 🙂
So that’s it for my little photo diary of what I’ve been doing to kick off the holiday season… and there’s still lots more to come in the near future 🙂
